A Personal Experiment on Mobile Data Usage with Globe

A Personal Experiment on Mobile Data Usage with Globe

I'm gonna be honest: "mobile data usage" never meant anything to me before. I used to just survive on the Internet that my Sun Broadband Pocket Wi-Fi provided me (even though half of the time - especially in the Fort! - all that I wanna do is rip my hair out coz there's no Sun signal there).

When my friend Renee got a new phone a few days ago, though, she started talking about mobile data usage. We don't use the same mobile network, so she was asking how my LTE was and whether 1GB was actually enough for mobile data usage during the day (she basically thinks 1GB isn't even close to being enough for a day).

I had no idea. Thus this experiment.

I'm a prepaid user, so I loaded up and signed up for Globe's SuperSurf999 Surf promo, good for 30 days. After that, I downloaded the "My Data Mgr" app, so I could properly monitor my mobile data usage.

Then, I promised myself to act as if I wasn't doing this experiment (so I wouldn't cheat and skimp on my mobile data usage) and just use my phone as usual.

Now, it is important to note that, as a blogger and a workaholic, I am constantly on my phone and the only time that I am not connected to the Internet is when I am asleep. I do have Wi-Fi at home, though, so that helps me save on using mobile data.

My Mobile Data Usage Results

Yes, I am a very precise person.

I took this screenshot exactly 24 hours after signing up for SuperSurf999 and as you can see, I only used 53MB of my mobile data.

Okay, I did use 115MB on Wi-Fi - but even combined, that's only a total of 168MB - still very far from the 1GB per day allotted in Globe's Fair Use Policy.

Also, I used Wi-Fi 69% of the time coz… why not? I've come to find that using mobile data makes my phone feel hot and drains my battery faster, so why keep it on if there's good Wi-Fi around?

My main point is that I wasn't even close to consuming 1GB yesterday. Why some people have been complaining about 1GB or 3GB per month is beyond me.

Of course, it is also important to note that I don't abuse my mobile data by downloading huge files, though. All that I do is check emails, tweet, check Facebook, check more emails, search for things on Google and stream a lotta stuff on YouTube.

So, if you're a fair user - that's why it's called FAIR Use Policy, after all ;) - 3GB per month is more than enough for you to get things done. Of course, I've only been monitoring my mobile data usage for a day, though.

I'll tell you if I still feel the same way after a week. :) Stay tuned!
