DVD Review: Hansel & Gretel

Without a doubt, my favorite no-princess-involved fairy tale of all time would have to be Hansel & Gretel. Why? Well, for starters, I grew up in Germany. Secondly, I have always loved stories with witches in them. And lastly, who doesn't love the names Hansel & Gretel? You can even shorten Hansel to Han, like Solo. Chyeah.

Hansel & Gretel

Anyhoo, I first watched Hansel & Gretel on the big screen with Gerd. And, while a lot of people will disagree with me on this, I have to say that Hansel & Gretel is one of the best twists on fairy tales I have ever seen. You just need to learn not to take it too seriously is all. :)

Hansel & Gretel: The Cast

Of course, the main reason why I watched Hansel & Gretel to begin with was Jeremy Renner. I've sorta kinda had a lil crush on him ever since Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and that crush just really skyrocketed and went out of hand from there.

It helps that Gemma Arterton, who plays Gretel in Hansel & Gretel, is drop dead gorgeous, too. Hansel & Gretel is also the movie where she proved to me that she was more than just a pretty face and Rachel Weisz wannabe... which is pretty much how I saw her in the remake of Clash of the Titans. She even got the American accent down pat. I was actually so surprised when I found out that she is, in fact, British! Mind. Blown.

Hansel & Gretel: The Witches

As for the witches in Hansel & Gretel... well, they are all a sight to see. You'll see about 60 or 70 witches in Hansel & Gretel and my childhood self just went ballistic checking them all out. I loved that I was able to inspect them better through the DVD and find out more about how they were made through the special feature entitled "Witching Hour" found on the DVD! :) Prosthetics > CGI any day, IMHO.

And the use of blood in Hansel & Gretel? So. Fun. You'll actually get to see a giant step on a man's head in this. #funspoiler

Hansel & Gretel: The Head Witch

Their choice for the head witch was also spot-on. In fact, Famke Janssen is officially one of my favorite movie witches along with Angelica Huston and Michelle Pfeiffer now. :D Fun fact: she only agreed to do Hansel & Gretel coz she needed money to pay for her mortgage. :p

Have you seen Hansel & Gretel yet? Did you like it? If you haven't seen Hansel & Gretel yet, do you want to? Well, you're in luck coz I'm giving away 3 copies of Hansel & Gretel today, courtesy of Magnavision! :)
