If I Look Back, I am Lost.

I finally got around to finishing Book One of A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones and with my gloomy mood as of late, there is one line in it that really struck my fancy and hit me hard:

If I look back, I am lost.

Daenerys Stormborn repeats this particular phrase to herself over and over again after she goes through a ton of shit in the book and, trust me: that's the understatement of the century.

I think one of the reasons why Dany is such a role model and why so many people dream of being a khaleesi like her is because of how strong she is despite everything that she has gone through. And I think one of the reasons why she has remained so strong is because of this particular motto of hers, "If I look back, I am lost."

Truth be told, there is a lot of truth in these words of hers. After all, remembering the past won't change it. In fact, the more you look back on the past, the more likely you will hate yourself for the mistakes that you committed, for the things that you could've done differently, or the things that you failed to do.

I will be the first to admit that the past can be a kind of drug. You want to keep revisiting the awesome bits because of how great they made you feel. You want to revel in your most infinite moments and maybe even toy with the idea of reliving those moments again if given the chance. However, you also need to remember that that drug is what brought you to today's depression in the first place.

So, stop looking back because looking back won't do anything but make you miserable. Instead, look to the future and think about how you can change for the better. There's nothing that you can do about the past, after all, so don't waste your time worrying about it. :)

Just smile, pray and let God! :)
