Movie Review: Drive

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from "Drive" when I decided to watch it. I hadn't seen the trailer. I hadn't seen the movie poster. All I knew was that Ryan Gosling was in it and that it got good reviews from Cannes. 15 minutes into the movie and I still had no idea what to expect from it.

"Drive", in a nutshell, revolves around the life of a movie stunt driver who gets involved in a heist gone wrong. For the first part of the movie, however, we get to focus on him and his relationship with a mom and her kid. Naturally, being a single mom - and just a girl, in general - this bit of the story really appealed to me. In fact, if I had my way, I would probably turn the entire movie into a sappy love story. And it would've gone well, too, what with Ryan Gosling's signature adorable smirk in it 24/7:

However, the sappiness was not to be. 15 minutes or so into the movie, someone got hurt and bled. And then every 15 minutes thereafter, somebody else either got hurt, bled or died - and in the most intense, most unique and most awesome-st ways ever, too. I'm talking fork in the eye, slash to the arm vein and stomps to the face! Move aside, "Saw", you just got served!

Now, please take note that I didn't really expect much from this movie because the last Ryan Gosling movie I had seen was "Lars and the Real Girl" (yes, I'm a loser and missed out on "Crazy, Stupid, Love."). But, after seeing this movie, I see him in a completely different light now. He is absolutely brilliant. I'd even go so far as to say that he reminds me of Christian Bale in "American Psycho" in this. Loved him!

I was a little confused with the old Hollywood retro '80s vibe that the music and the fonts had going (what was up with that?), but I stopped caring once the action scenes came on. I liked how the violent sounds were muffled and I absolutely loved the intense violence. I have never said "whoaaa" that many times during a movie before. Let me put it that way.

The music was great. The direction was great. The actors were great. And, although there wasn't a lot of dialogue going on during most of the movie, it worked really well. I was pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend this movie to people who love seeing other people kick other people's faces in until their skulls smash all over the floor.

Delicious stuff.

My official rating: 4 stars out of 5

What can I say? I like my blood, violence and guys with adorable smirks who like single moms. GWTP.

  6. I've loved Ryan Gosling ever since The Notebook. He's not only hot, but a great actor as well. You should see him in Blue Valentine. It's a sad movie but the acting was superb. :)
